#45 Suo Juzenji Ruin and vicinity

Yamaguchi Shi, Yamaguchi Ken

Juzenji (read as Chusenshi, Suzenji, Susenji, et...) means "mint bureau". This one was in operation for the longest period among all the mint bureaus in Japan, and this place was the only one operated between 820 to 950. Now there is only a monument, "Suo Juzenji Ato (Ruin of Suo Juzenji)".

This is a birthplace of Masujiro Omura, a leader of Meiji Restoration.

Around Nagasawa pond, Suzenji Kyodokan (Folk Museum) exhibits of relics, coins made here, materials related to Masujiro Omura. Temporarily closed (as of October 2021).

A torii in Nagasawa pond; in 1902 when the nearby Sumiyoshi shrine was demolished, the torii was moved to the pond.

"Nagasawa Garden" is a typical cozy Showa era style inn/hot spring/restaurant, and 'udon noodle vending machine'.
