Yamaguchi Shi, Yamaguchi Ken
An island with a shrine in Yamaguchi Bay. Since it appears on low tide, it is called "Mont Saint-Michel of Yamaguchi". Many migratory birds rest here, and their droppings have caused environmental problems. Me-shima (or Me-jima) means "female island", and there is O-shima "male island" across, both were initially "kofun" (ancient tombs).
