Hofu Shi, Yamaguchi Ken
Santoka (1882 - 1940) is a pen-name of Shoichi Tanda, born in Hofu. Considered a unique poet of "free-style" haiku poetry, a mode that abandoned much of the customary form and subject matter of traditional haiku in favor of a direct and unadorned depiction of human experience. He was a wandering poet and ascetic Zen priest for the last fifteen years of his life. Stone statue at JR Shin Yamaguchi station, and poetry monument near Yuda Onsen, next to Chuya Nakahara's monument. Gochuan is a replica of his former residence in Hofu City.
