#168 Ukashima

Yamaguchi ken, Suo Oshima


About 30 minutes boat ride from Hikuma in Suo Oshima.


Ukishima is located approximately 5 km northwest of Maena Port, Suo-Oshima Town.The flat area is narrow due to sandbars, and most of it is hilly land made of granite, which is susceptible to erosion. During the Battle of Itsukushima in 1555, it was the home base of the Ugashima pirates who sided with Tou(陶). After the war, the island was wiped out by the Mori clan and became an uninhabited island, but 130 years later, four farmers cultivated this land. The ferry operates four times a day. Population: 237 people (as of April 1, 2019) Number of households: 103 (as of April 1, 2019) Area 2.30k㎡ Coastal length 6.8km

Known for fishing, sardines (iriko), hijiki seaweeds, tanjerines, etc.
