#147 Gokurakuji and Janoike pond

Gokuraku-ji Temple is an ancient temple with a long history that is said to have been founded in 731 by the monk Gyoki. Gokuraku-ji is also a temple associated with Mori Motonari, the warlord of Hiroshima. There are wooden sculptures and structures designated as important historical property. The Great Buddha is made of parquet and is 8m high including the pedestal and 5.5m wide, weighs 2.5 tons. Gokurakuji Temple has been known as a power spot in Hiroshima for a long time because of its history of more than 1,200 years and its majestic appearance surrounded by a forest of fir trees that are over 500 years old.


Adjacent to the temple is Janoike, a pond with water lilies. According to the legend, Ja (daija, a giant serpent with 8 heads) used to live in this pond.
