Sumiyoshi jinja is known for its serene atmosphere, traditional architecture, and its role as a place of prayer for safe journeys and success. It is also the ichinomiya (highest-ranking shrine) of the former Nagato Province.
It features five connected worship halls with traditional chidori-hafu gables, displaying the rare architectural style known as Kyukensha from 1370.
This is one of the three major Sumiyoshi shrines in Japan, along with Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine in Osaka and Hakata. (January 2024)
