#143 Inami Betsuin Zuisenji

Inami Machi, Toyama ken

Zuisenji Temple was built in 1390 by Hongan Temple’s 5th leader Shakunyo of the Hokuriku Pure Land Sect of Buddhism. It has a 600-year history, but sadly burnt down over 100 years ago. To rebuild the temple, a famous woodcarver Maekawa Sanshirou was dispatched from Kyoto, and it was his skills that were passed on through the generations as the groundwork for modern Inami woodcarving. This is currently the largest wooden temple in the Hokuriku area. The intricate wooden carvings are found all over the temple. The temple is the origin of the wood carving that the Inami area is famous for.
