#92 Gion Matsuri

Gion, Kyoto

One of the three largest festivals in Japan

July 2016

Gion Matsuri (祇園祭), the festival of Yasaka Shrine, is the most famous festival in Japan. It takes place over the entire month of July. The floats historically contain Persian carpet.

"Persian carpets were introduced to Japan during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. It is believed that it came to Japan via the Silk Road and China at that time. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was in power at the time, loved the beauty and cut the carpet and wore it as a jinba-ori. In addition, at the Gion Festival, Persian carpets, which are said to have been handed down in the 17th century, are displayed on the hangings that decorate the floats."
