Omi Jima, Nagato Shi, Yamaguchi Ken

2017

Omijima (Oomishima) is an island with a connecting bridge to Nagato City. About 40km along the coast, rough sea, caves and odd rock formation. Whale catching used to be a main industry here. There is a whale museum and a tomb (built in 1692) for the fetus of the whales.

Original tree of Natsumikan, a popular citrus in the area. It is said a lady, Chou Nishimoto, picked up a seed on the beach (1772-80) and planted here. Its flower is designated as Yamaguchi prefecture's flower.
