Yanai shi, Yamaguchi Ken
The lantern festival in Yanai takes place around Obon (mid August). Kingyo Chochin, shaped like goldfish are made out of washiand bamboo. The old merchant district has historic merchant homes with white walls (shirakabe).
The goldfish lanterns are lit up throughout the street during summer.
The festival is accompanied by many food stands and bon dance stages, and highlight of the festival are large floats with giant goldfish lanterns. In 2022, the festival was conducted under some restrictions (without food stands, stages and floats) due to the pandemic. (August, 2022)
