Dry Landscape Garden (karesansui) in Ryōanji
Ryoanji, a rinzaishu zen temple, was built in 1450 by Katsumoto Hosokawa.
The Ryōanji garden is one of the most famous examples of a rock garden—a form which developed during the Muromachi period (1392–1573) with the efflorescence of Zen Buddhism in medieval Japan. White gravel often symbolizes flowing elements such as waterfalls, rivers, creeks, or sea, while rocks suggest islands, shores, or bridges. (2015 Summer)
